This video is dedicated to Mr. Hayato Tani, one of Japan’s most handsome actors in the 1960s-1980s. Often he is mistaken as a “Half” or mix-blood with European, but he is pure Japanese. He was born in Kagoshima City to Japanese parents. His father was a tall, handsome Japanese military officer, and his mother was a housewife. He was the only son; there were three older sisters and one younger sister in his family. All the children were quite attractive. Due to his father’s career, Hayato and his sisters grew up in Sasebo, Nagasaki in Kyushu, where his mother originally came from.
When Hayato was 11 years old, his father’s job took the family to Tokyo. In 1961, at age 15, he was scouted and got a small role in a TV drama. In 1963, he met Yujiro Ishihara, Japan’s legendary actor. Hayato grew up watching Yujiro’s films and was deeply influenced by him. From that fatal meeting, Hayato decided to become a film star just like Yujiro and applied for an audition at Nikkatsu Film Studio, a major film studio where Yujiro was a star. Hayato was lucky to be accepted by Nikkatsu.
Hayato decided to become an “action star.” After Nikkatsu, he moved to Tohei Film Studio, another famous film studio for “action films.” At this time, Hayato was still worried about earning enough money to live as an actor, so he kept his second job at night. Later, with “Key Hunter,” a major hit TV drama series, Hayato decided to quit the night job and focus on acting. He was already very popular and was said to be Japan’s “Alain Delon.”
In 1966, at Tohei, Hayato was an action star. In his first film directed by Yasuo Furuhata, starring Midori Mako, “Delinquent Girl Yoko,” Hayato, Reiko Ohara, and Renji Ishibashi performed Haiminal in Shinjuku. These named stars became all major stars in Japan/the world.
Alain Delon, the world’s most beautiful actor in France often visited Japan, working with Japanese actors and actresses in Franco-Japanese films. Hayato had a chance to meet with Alain.
Hayato was also chosen as the image character in Japan for designer Ted Lapidus. His second wife, Kikko Matsuoka, met for the first time when Tohei sent him to Jun Suzuki and Mieko Arima for voice training soon after joining Tohei. Hayato was Tohei’s key action star, and was active in many well-known films like the “Abashiri Bangaichi Series,” “Bad Bancho Series,” and “Yoru Kayo Series.” It is said that the reason why he appeared in the “Bad Bancho Series” was that he liked Steve McQueen and was good at driving motorcycles.
Appearing as one of the main characters in the TV drama “Key Hunter,” which started in 1968, along with Tetsuro Tanba and Shinichi Chiba, Hayato became a popular action star in Japan/the world. At the end of 1968, when he appeared as a male clothing model for department stores, his popularity with women sored; he began to be featured in idol magazines and gossipped heavily.
After “Key Hunter,” Hayato appeared regularly as one of the main cast in the programs “Aiful Daisakusen” (1973-1974) and “Birdie Daisakusen” (1974-1975). For a total of 7 years, he has been active as the face of a serial drama on TBS Saturday 9:00 with Tanba. In the meantime, he played a high school student at the age of 27 in the starring movie “Hinjo Gakuen Waru” (1973), which was serialized until 1974, at which time he left Tohei Film Studio.
After “Birdie Daisakusen,” Hayato was asked to appear in the program “G Men ’75,” but with the appearance of “Kantarou Terauchi Family 2,” his interest in domestic dramas began to rise and he declined to break away from being an “action star.” This was a turning point that led to a change in position from an actor to a talent. Since then, Hayato has been active mainly in a variety of shows in addition to various dramas. From 1986 to 1989, he made a regular appearance in “Exciting Nariyuki Program Fuun! Takeshi’s Castle” and played the attacking captain, which attracted a lot of attention. He also plays the role of the attacking captain in the Reiwa version.
In 2023, Hayato is retired and enjoys a quiet, peaceful life with his beloved wife, Kikko; they, unfortunately, did not have any children.
