長崎の原爆で妻を亡くし、自らも被爆して重傷を負いながら、被爆者の治療に全力を尽くした医師・永井隆氏の手記「長崎の鐘」。
作詞家のサトウ氏はこの本に感銘を受けて歌にしようと決意し、この曲が生まれました。(ニッポン放送記事より引用)

“The Bells of Nagasaki” is a memoir by Takashi Nagai, a doctor who lost his wife in the Nagasaki atomic bombing and was seriously injured in the bombing himself, but who devoted himself to treating the victims. Sato was so impressed by this book that he decided to write a song about it, and this song was born.
