This 2001 film is one of the last films Mr. Sanada made in Japan, and it is absolutely fantastic. A fantasy film based on novels and set during the Heian Period of Japan, the characters were charming and entertaining, the story had lots of action and some intrigue as well, and the lead characters were beautifully done. I am biased, having watched this movie many many times, but I highly recommend it, and have shared it with many, even those who are not specifically fans of Mr. Sanada, and they enjoyed it very much. This film has the distinction of being one of only a few of Mr. Sanada’s Japanese films that is actually relatively easy to obtain in the west!
